Powncified is back

I know, I know! Powncified hasn’t been working for some time now.  In fact it’s been out of action for over two weeks.  My excuse is that with the JavaOne trip and the big push for the upcoming Altio 5.2 release I’ve been too busy to get things sorted.  My excuse for not putting up a post to explain this and acknowledge the issue doesn’t exist.  I don’t have one.  Sorry.

It turns out that my server was blocked by Pownce for making too many requests to their API in too short a time.   This surprised me as I had taken care to reduce the amount of requests I made but it appears my method wasn’t sophisticated enough.  With enough grovelling I managed to get my server’s IP removed from their block list.  Thanks to Mike for that.

So I’ve got Powncified up and running now with a newer version of the API that makes it easier to poll the public note list in the way my script does without making too many requests.  In the next couple of weeks, when I have time, I’ll be looking to provide a simple XML API and RSS feed for querying Powncified from a third party application or an RSS reader.  A particularly useful feature will be the ability to query all the Pownce notes posted about a given URL.

I’ll also be looking to improve the UI of the site a little, maybe rework the layout and theme of the pages if I have the time and motivation.  I’ll certainly be looking to incorporate oEmbed into the site.  The brainchild of those clever people at Pownce and a couple of others, oEmbed is a machine readable format that allows owners of media content to describe how third parties can embed that media within their own webpages.  The list of supporting media providers currently include Flickr, Viddler, Qik.  Unfortunately Youtube, the king of embedded media content, has yet to get onboard.
